ABOUT TAOS, NEW MEXICO. Taos lies in the north-central region of New Mexico, seated on the high-desert mesa at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Taos calls itself the “Town of Taos” and was incorporated as such in 1934. The word Taos means “red willow” in the Tiwa language. Located close to Taos Pueblo, the Native American village and tribe from which it takes its name, it is also the county seat of Taos County. The name also refers to the nearby ski resort of Taos Ski Valley. POPULATION: Town of Taos is 6,213, Taos County is 26,556, Taos Pueblo is 1,264. Population Density: 9.8 persons per square mile (United States = 64 per square mile). Ethnic Composition: Hispanic is 57.9%, Anglo is 33.8%, Native American is 6.6%, Other is 1.7%. Air Service: The Taos Regional Airport is located 7 miles west of Taos. There is a 5,800 ft. landing strip. Regularly scheduled roundtrip flights are available daily between Taos and other New Mexico locations. Motor Freight Service: RAC Motor Freight has a Taos terminal with daily pickup and delivery in Taos County and interstate terminal connections in Albuquerque and Denver.
